Volunteering at TRCC/MWAR
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What opportunities are there at TRCC/MWAR for me?
Lots. We need volunteers for our crisis line programme (the most popular), face-to-face counselling, front desk, fundraising initiatives and lots more.
2. Do I need a degree? What educational qualifications do I need?
None. We train all our women ourselves. Some of our volunteers have degrees some don't. We want women who are committed to ending violence against women and children and cherish their experiences and energy.
3. How old do I have to be?
We don't have limits. For some women (because of their living situation, age, etc.) have barriers to participating in some of the programmes. We work with women to come up with creative solutions to allow all women to join.
4. How do I get involved?
Most women attend our orientation session and then sign up for the training/area they are interested in. We host orientation twice a year; once in the late winter/early spring and then again in the fall.

5. Will I have to talk about my experience of sexual violence?
Probably, yes. We don't demand that women talk about their own experiences or 'disclose', but when you are working on the line with someone in crisis, you need to know a lot about your issues and boundaries so that you don't make mistakes. One of the ways you can do this is to talk about your experience(s) in a supportive environment.
6. How much time do I need to commit?
We ask that crisis line counselors commit to three 8 hours shifts per month for (at least) 1 year, (after training), plus you can count on 1 meeting every 6 - 8 weeks.
7. Will you send a letter to my worker/school/for my resume?
Sure. Once you have completed the training and your 1 year commitment. If you need a letter saying you are in training for your worker we will do that as soon as training starts.
8. I can't afford to go to training.
We will provide TTC tickets to those who need them and reimburse women for their childcare expenses. At training we provide (usually) fantastic food (everyone's coming from work or school). If this doesn't help you, talk to a member of the orientation team so that we can problem-solve with you.
