BOWLATHON 2004

10 STEPS TO BECOMING A TEAM CAPTAIN

What is a team captain?

A team captain is part organizer, part cheerleader. A team captain is someone who likes to get things done and is willing to recruit others to help.

What's in it for the team captain?

If your team meets the team minimum of $500, you receive a TRCC/MWAR reward, plus one raffle ticket for each team you recruit. Each ticket gives you an opportunity to win wonderful prizes. Every team that raises $500 also qualifies for a cool team prize.

As well, you become a part of TRCC history as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary and reach our goal of $100,000. Of course we will heap lavish praise upon you and thank you repeatedly!

How do I get started?

In this website you will find:

What does a team captain do?

STEP 1: Organize other people (friends, family, co-workers, neighbours) into a bowling team for a total of 4-6 players (we suggest 5 bowlers). No previous bowling experience is necessary, nor do players have to be good bowlers.

STEP 2: Make sure all team members have a pledge form and a postcard. Each bowler will canvas their network of family, friends, etc. to collect pledges to bowl. The pledges are a flat fee, not a per pin amount.

Tax receipts will only be issued:

  • if requested
  • for donations of $20.00 or more.
  • we have their name and full address
Please ask your team to inform donors that only a small percentage of the donation is applied as a tax credit. For example, on a $50 donation the donor gets $8.50 (17%) in federal credit plus $3.19 in provincial credit for a total of $11.69 (based on under $200 of total donations). The cost to the centre is time, paper, and postage. We will of course issue receipts for any donation requested over $10 but we would prefer to not automatically receipt hundreds of small donations. Also, we ask all bowlers to ensure that names/addresses are legible and complete with postal code.

STEP 3: Adult team members are asked to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges to cover their costs. Kids are asked to raise a minimum of $25, students age 12 and up, $50. Reassure everyone on the team that if they can collect an average of $10 from 18 people they will have raised $180, which will allow us to reach our goal of $100,000. Bowlers who raise more than $150 qualify for great prizes.

  • If they raise $150 - $199 in pledges they receive a TRCC/MWAR prize, plus entertainment passes/CDs.
  • If they raise $200 - $300 they win the prize, plus entertainment passes/CDs, and are entered into draw #1 for more prizes.
  • If they raise over $300 they win the prize, passes/CDs and are entered into draw #2 for fabulous prizes.
STEP 4: With your team, decide what type of bowling you want - -either 5 or 10 pin. Cosmic bowling is a crazy mutation of bowling and a dance club! The lights over the lanes are turned off, and the alleys and pins glow an eerie colour thanks to the black lights. There's music in the background, and disco balls spinning all around. Not for the serious bowler!

STEP 5: Decide when you want to bowl. The first shift begins at l pm. The 2nd shift starts at 4 pm, 3rd shift at 7pm. Both afternoon shifts offer 5 pin bowling on one side and 10 pin bowling on the other side. The evening shift features 10 pin only.

STEP 6: Choose a team name - the lane will be booked under whatever name you decide upon. Be daring, quirky, or not; it's your choice!

STEP 7: Let us know by February 14/04, the name of your team, who your team members are, when you wish to bowl, what type of bowling. The earlier you confirm, the more choices you will have.

STEP 8: Call your team members prior to the event and arrange to meet them 15-30 minutes before you are scheduled to bowl. Encourage members to meet the $100 minimum (this is where the cheerleading comes in!) and remind them to bring the money to the Bowlathon. Cheques can be made payable to the TRCC/MWAR or our full name.

STEP 9: When you meet your team at the bowling alley, please ensure that the amounts on the pledge form match the total amount of cash/cheques you are submitting. Then collect their pledge forms and money and bring it to the registration desk.

STEP 10: Lead your team members to get their shoes and find your lane. Put on your shoes, pick up your bowling ball and celebrate! Your job is done! Thank you!
